Trumpet and Flugelhorn

Note from the Composer: Greetings trumpet and flugelhorn players! While my background is in percussion and harp, I have always loved being close to the trumpet section in ensembles. After writing a concerto for trumpet in 2019, I’ve started expanding this section of my catalogue and am eager to work with performers interested in developing new rep together—so if you’re looking for something new, let’s talk!

Hops for trumpet in Bb and piano (2022)

Recording from Nicole Gillotti’s album, Many Faces

Duration: 6’30”

Commissioner: Nicole Gillotti (Website | YouTube)

Mutes used: harmon mute (stem in)

Commissioned by Nicolle Gillotti to pay tribute to two of her great loves - beer and skiing - Hops lives up to its name. After a brief solo from the trumpet, the piano soon picks up a lilting melody that rips up and down as the motive passes to the trumpet and back. Buzzing, burbling, swirling, singing, leaping, and—of course—hopping permeate the piece, creating a fun challenge for performers and a delightful listen that is sure to leave audiences thirsty for more!

Kindred Spirits for trumpet in C + piano or wind ensemble (2019, rev. 2022)

This work is in three movements:

1. Ahuixotl (3’00”)
2. Moon Rabbit (5’00”)
3. Thunderbird (4’30”)

To read more about this work, visit the blog post linked here.

Duration: 12'30"

Commissioner: Andrew Chybowski, Pittsburg State University Wind Ensemble (wind ensemble version), and Will Koehler (piano version)

Mutes used: straight mute (Movement 1 only), harmon mute (stem in, Movement 2 only)

Kindred Spirits was written for trumpet player, Will Koehler. The work was inspired by our mutual passion, mythological creatures. While many pieces exist for Greek and Roman creations, I wanted to write a work which focused on creatures which had parallels across the globe. The Ahuixotl (hailing from Aztec legends, with parallels in Russia and Ireland) is a demonic water creature, similar to a dog; it resides in fresh water sources, such as lakes, and has a claw-like tail that snatches unsuspecting swimmers from the surface. The Moon Rabbit is by far the most prominent throughout the world—cultures throughout time and throughout the globe have seemed to notice a rabbit on the face of the moon, though they have different explanations for how it came to be there. I was particularly inspired by the Cree version, in which a rabbit wishes to go the moon and rides the back of a crane; the crane stretches its legs, and the rabbit digs its paws into the crane’s head to hold on. The rabbit has, by all accounts, remained there to this day. The last movement, inspired by the Thunderbird, is most commonly known the US as hailing from North American tribes (particularly Algonquian tribes), though parallels exist in South African and Māori traditions as well. The Thunderbird is thought to have been of unimaginable size, serving both as a protector of the innocent and the judge, jury, and executioner of the wicked.

Duos and Trios with Trumpet or Flugelhorn

Road Trip 101 for alto saxophone (dbl soprano), trumpet (dbl flugel), and piano (2023)

From the premiere at the University of Arkansas SHE Festival (Mvts 1 and 2). Performance starts at 1:32:05

This work is in three movements:

1. Morning (4’45”)
2. Afternoon (3’30”)
3. Evening (4’00”)

Duration: 12’15”

Commissioner: Sarah Hetrick, Nicole Gillotti, and Tatiana Gorbunova

Mutes used: None

Inspired by a summer road trip along the 101 Coastal Highway, Road Trip 101 is a tour-de-force in ensemble playing, often challenging players to pick up lines and blur textures seamlessly across voices. In Morning, the initial fog quickly lifts as the piano continuously motors along in vibrantly incessant pulses as the other voices sound car horn unisons, swerving lines, thick tremolo interruptions, and large leaps. The fog returns at the end of the movement, signaling the start of a hot, buzzy afternoon. Afternoon attempts to capture both the usual sleepy feeling a hot summer sun can bring, as well as fits of energy as one tries to rouse themselves. Noble efforts to awake often slink back to a slumber. The movement slows to a quiet finish, ever dimming. In Evening, we hear both the sparkling shimmer of stars as well as the rich darkness of night. This lush movement basks in the adventures of the day before drifting away into the night.

Chamber Ensemble Works with Trumpet or Flugelhorn

near death for brass quintet (2023)

This work will be recorded by Calypsus Brass in 2024 for an album! In the meantime, a MIDI rendering is available upon request.

This work is in three movements:

1. fall (4’15”)
2. feast (4’30”)
3. flourish (4’00”)

Duration: 12’45”

Commissioner: Calypsus Brass Quintet (Website)

Inspired by the concept of whale falls, near death explores the fascinating life of a whale’s body after death.

In fall, the great whale descends to the ocean floor with great weight, expressive moans, and expansive depth. feast sees the violent flurry of deep-ocean feeders gathering to devour and savor the rare treat. Not all is mourning and decay, however, as in flourish the listener sees how the whale ultimately fosters something new—creating a safe, stable, and sustaining harbor for decades of life still to come.

More information on this work will be made available in the coming months, but in the meantime you can check out the blogs written about this fascinating feat of nature and catch glimpses of the piece at the links below:

Our Little Secrets for brass ensemble (2018, arr. 2022)

Most ensemble configurations can be accommodated for no additional charge! Arrangements already available include:

1. 3 trumpets, 3 horns, 3 trombones, 1 tuba (original)
3. 3 trumpets, 3 horns, 3 trombone, 1 bass trombone
4. 3 trumpets, 3 horns, 2 trombones, 1 euphonium, 1 tuba

Duration: 4’45”

Commissioner: Pacific Brass Ensemble (arrangement) and NEXT Commissioning Consortium (original wind octet version)

Mutes used: None

Our Little Secrets was originally commissioned by the NEXT Commissioning Consortium, which aimed to provide flexible instrumentation works at various difficulty levels. The wind octet proved immensely popular among wind ensembles and graduate conducting students, so it was a pleasure to bring this piece to a completely new instrument group. In this arrangement made specially for brass ensemble, the shifts in color are made all the more subtle by the more homogenous relationship between instruments—making for lightning fast counterpoint, wonderful antiphonal effects, wild rips and fast trills, and thunderously powerful arrivals in the low voices.

The fiery counterpoint, powerful tutti moments, and sustained energy throughout the work makes this an ideal work for recitals—and special occasions! While a recording could not be made of this performance, the quintet version beautifully expanded into various arrangements for brass ensemble, making this a great piece for any brass group of 5 players or more!
